Survey reveals how AI is transforming developer roles

A new study conducted by GitHub, involving 22 experienced AI tool users, shows that the very definition of a software developer’s role is rapidly transforming—from initial skepticism to trust, as AI takes a central place in daily workflows. Many developers were initially cautious about AI, but those who continued using it experienced a series of “aha!” moments, realizing how much time AI saves and how naturally it integrates into their workflow.

The study describes the process in four phases: from Skeptic, through Explorer and Collaborator, to Strategist—who already leverages AI for complex tasks and focuses on delegating and validating model outputs. Most respondents believe that within the next 2 to 5 years, AI could write up to 90% of their code, yet they do not feel threatened. On the contrary, they see the core value of their role as managing AI and verifying its results.

This new type of developer is described as a “realistic optimist”: instead of fearing replacement, they see AI as an opportunity for growth, higher ambition, and a focus on more complex challenges. The research clearly indicates that the concept of a software engineer is already changing—in the future, key skills will include prompt design, systems thinking, agent management, and AI literacy, while actual coding will become only one part of a broader human-machine orchestration.
