OpenAI plans to introduce erotic and mature conversations within ChatGPT, confirmed CEO Sam Altman. The new mode will be available exclusively to verified adult users, with strict safety measures and usage restrictions.
Altman explained that ChatGPT has so far been overly restrictive, which he said reduced the enjoyment of user interactions. The new version, planned for release later this year, aims to restore some of the freedom users appreciated in earlier models like GPT-4o.
The feature will allow ChatGPT to engage in mature and erotic conversations with adult users who explicitly request it. Altman emphasized that the system will not activate this mode automatically — only upon request — and that all users will undergo age and safety verification checks.
OpenAI had previously announced that developers would be able to create “mature” applications within ChatGPT, equipped with proper protection and access control mechanisms.
This decision comes at a time when the AI companion market is rapidly expanding, led by systems such as xAI’s Grok. While the new mode gives users more freedom, experts warn that emotional dependency on AI companions remains an uncharted risk — especially when it comes to intimate interactions with machines that can simulate emotions but cannot feel them.
