OpenAI, Retro Biosciences make old cells young again

OpenAI, in collaboration with Retro Biosciences, has published a study that opens a new chapter in the fight against aging. Using a customized AI model, researchers redesigned proteins that transform mature cells into stem cells — with 50 times greater efficiency compared to the original versions that won the Nobel Prize in 2012.

Instead of standard language models trained on internet data, the team developed GPT-4b micro, a model specialized exclusively for biological data. This system successfully “reshaped” the well-known Yamanaka proteins — factors that reprogram aged cells back into a stem-cell-like state. The results showed dramatic improvements: cells were converted into stem cells 50x more efficiently and exhibited much stronger DNA repair capabilities.

The study confirmed a reversal of one of the key biological hallmarks of aging, with findings validated by independent laboratories. This breakthrough clearly demonstrates the power of custom AI models: while public models assist users in everyday tasks, specialized systems can accelerate discoveries that would otherwise take decades of lab work.

If such results continue, we may be witnessing a revolution in regenerative medicine — one where AI actively designs new therapies to rejuvenate our cells and extend healthy human lifespans.

In brief: Tech World Highlights
