Jony Ive details OpenAI’s hardware vision

Former Apple chief designer Jony Ive gave the first concrete hints about a joint hardware project with OpenAI during a conversation with Sam Altman at this year’s Dev Day. The idea: create a new generation of AI devices that improve our uneasy relationship with technology.

Ive emphasized that today we live in an “uneasy relationship with technology” — devices connect us, yet make us anxious, distracted, and disconnected from the real world. His vision is to create AI devices that make us calmer, more fulfilled, and more connected, rather than dependent.

After OpenAI acquired his company io in May for $6.5 billion, Ive’s team has already developed between 15 and 20 device concepts that could form a “product family” — a new generation of computing experiences.

Ive considers it “absurd” to try delivering AI through outdated forms like phones or laptops, while Altman warns that “patience will be needed” since the goal is to create a completely new way of using computers.

If successful, this duo could redefine how we experience technology — shifting from screens that tire us to AI assistants that calm, understand, and support us. However, given Altman’s announcement of slow development, it may be some time before we see the first OpenAI device.
