Google has introduced DolphinGemma, a specialized AI model that aims to “understand” dolphin sounds. The project was developed in collaboration with researchers from Georgia Tech and is based on years of real-world dolphin communication data.
What’s it about exactly?
The AI was trained on decades of audio recordings collected by the Wild Dolphin Project and is capable of analyzing sequences of sounds — similar to how large language models (like GPT) analyze human speech. So, it doesn’t just recognize patterns, it can also predict the next “sound” or “sentence” in dolphin language.
Even more interesting — Google has created a device based on the Pixel 9 phone, designed to go underwater and use this model in real-time to communicate with dolphins — equipped with underwater microphones and speakers. So this isn’t just analysis, it’s potential interaction.
The plan is to release DolphinGemma as open-source this summer, allowing other researchers to adapt it for different dolphin species — a move that could lead to major breakthroughs in understanding animal intelligence.
And yes, many have previously tried to “talk to dolphins,” but we’ve never had this combination of massive datasets, cutting-edge AI, and real-world tech in the field. This may be the first real step toward two-way communication with another species.
