The U.S. FDA has approved Vizz 1.44% eye drops, which could become a real solution for those over 45 who reach for glasses to read menus or fine print. These drops, whose active ingredient is aceclidine, are the first daily eye drops designed to treat presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) in this way.
Vizz works by contracting the sphincter muscle of the iris, reducing the pupil to less than 2 mm and creating a “pinhole effect” similar to a camera. The result is greater depth of focus and clearer near vision — without the “zoomed-in” or blurry effect of older generations of such drops.
Clinical trials have shown that a single dose begins to work within 30 minutes and provides up to 10 hours of sharp near vision. Over more than 30,000 days of use, only mild and temporary side effects have been reported, such as brief dimming of vision or eye irritation.
The real innovation in Vizz is its selective miotic approach, which is more advanced than previous topical treatments. It will come in single-use bottles and is expected to reach the U.S. market by the end of 2025. Experts predict it could significantly shake up the $100 billion vision correction market, especially as presbyopia increasingly affects generations of digital users.
