In July 2025, Sarajevo once again found itself at the center of European attention – this time as the host of the Eastern European Machine Learning (EEML) summer school, a prestigious event in the field of artificial intelligence, taking place from July 21 to 26 at Hotel Holiday.
More than 350 participants from over 50 countries gathered in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina to learn together, share ideas, and lay the foundation for the future of AI research and innovation.
This is the first time that the EEML summer school is being held in Bosnia and Herzegovina, following previous editions in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, and Serbia.
The event is organized by researchers from Google DeepMind in partnership with the Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (ANNT) and the University of Sarajevo, with the aim of strengthening local and regional capacities in the field of artificial intelligence.
Three key contributions of this event: Education, inspiration, and connection
- Education for the future – The summer school offers participants insight into the latest AI trends, approaches, and technologies, through lectures and hands-on workshops led by world-renowned experts.
- Inspiration for change – Participants come from diverse countries and academic backgrounds, and the gathering in Sarajevo serves as motivation to bring knowledge back to their local communities and industries.
- Connecting talents – EEML creates a space for regional and international networking, strengthening cooperation, and forming new research partnerships in the field of AI.
As Željko Komšić, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized at the official opening, artificial intelligence is recognized as one of the key drivers of modern societal development, and for Bosnia and Herzegovina, it represents an opportunity to build a more competitive and sustainable future through knowledge, innovation, and international cooperation.
Komšić underlined that events like this are not only about knowledge exchange – they help shape new leaders, build bridges between countries, and enable young professionals to actively participate in global technological trends.
