China deploys battlefield ‘robot wolves’

Chinese state television CCTV has released new footage of “wolf robots” — quadrupedal unmanned vehicles armed with combat rifles — in action during People’s Liberation Army military exercises.

Unlike earlier, lighter robot dogs used mainly for reconnaissance, these reinforced models are specifically designed for frontline combat. They move in coordinated “packs,” carrying automatic rifles such as the QBZ-191 and executing precise strikes at distances of up to 100 meters.

In such formations, the robots share tasks: “pack leaders” transmit images from the battlefield, while scouts, shooters, and ammunition carriers adjust their roles on the move. Thanks to AI navigation, LiDAR sensors, and near-unlimited endurance, they are capable of undertaking high-risk missions and reducing human casualties.

These exercises, following the debut of wolf robots in late 2024, mark the first deployment of such armed units alongside soldiers in simulated firefights without live ammunition. Their introduction sparks a mix of national pride and concern over the future of autonomous combat machines armed with firearms.
