Apple looks to accelerate Siri development using external AI

Apple is considering handing over Siri’s AI integration to external companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic—a major shift from its traditionally closed strategy. Instead of relying solely on in-house models, Apple is testing the possibility of running these third-party systems directly on its own servers, but under full control.

The project is led by Mike Rockwell, the former head of the Vision Pro team, with the goal of catching up to serious competitors like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, which already leverage advanced real-time AI models.

Apple remains cautious—it continues to develop its own model, internally referred to as “LLM Siri,” but according to insider sources, progress has been slow and the results are not strong enough to compete in the market.

Anthropic is reportedly demanding a multi-billion-dollar licensing deal for its AI, prompting Apple to also negotiate with OpenAI to strengthen its bargaining position.

Siri, once a pioneer among digital assistants, is now trying to reclaim relevance in the age of artificial intelligence—and Apple, known for its walled garden, is for the first time considering outsourcing intelligence as a solution.
