Researchers at Imperial College London have published a study on the use of an AI stethoscope capable of detecting serious heart conditions in just a few seconds—achieving far higher rates of early diagnoses compared to traditional tools.
The study included more than 12,000 patients across 200 medical practices. Results showed that the detection rate for heart failure was twice as high compared to conventional methods. In addition, patients examined with the device recorded 3.5 times more cases of atrial fibrillation and nearly double the diagnoses of heart valve disease.
The device, about the size of a card, uses AI to analyze heartbeat patterns and blood flow variations that the human ear cannot detect, while also recording ECG results. All data is sent to a cloud system, where AI algorithms process it and flag at-risk patients—within seconds.
The plan is to gradually roll out the AI stethoscope across the UK, where it could revolutionize preventive medicine. The device highlights how even a tool over 200 years old, like the stethoscope, can gain remarkable new abilities when paired with artificial intelligence.
