Researchers from Caltech and USC have transformed medical microbubbles from imaging into enzyme-powered microrobots, capable of autonomously navigating to tumors or being guided by external magnets, then exploding to deliver chemotherapy deep into cancerous tissue.
Enzyme-coated bubbles react with urea in bodily fluids to generate propulsion, allowing them to move through tissue without batteries or electronics. Doctors can control the microrobots with magnets or let them follow chemical gradients to the tumor on their own.
When a swarm of bubbles accumulates at the target site, ultrasound activates them, delivering drugs deep into tissue rather than just on the surface. This technology demonstrates how microrobots could make chemotherapy more precise, reducing damage to healthy tissue and potentially alleviating drug side effects.
