A new blood test screens for 50 types of cancer

A new test called Galleri has shown encouraging results in clinical trials across North America, successfully detecting more than 50 different types of cancer — including those for which there are currently no routine screenings.

In a year-long study involving approximately 25,000 adults in the U.S. and Canada, around 1% of participants received a positive signal from the test. Of these cases, 62% were later confirmed as actual cancer cases through diagnostic follow-up — representing a significant advancement, though not yet perfect.

When used alongside standard screenings such as mammography or colonoscopy, Galleri increased the overall early cancer detection rate more than sevenfold. However, challenges remain: 38% of false-positive results caused unnecessary concern, and 196 cancer cases went undetected during follow-up.

If tests like Galleri can be successfully scaled, they could enable early detection of deadly tumors such as pancreatic, ovarian, and esophageal cancers, which are otherwise diagnosed only in advanced stages. Experts emphasize, however, that such tests should not replace existing screenings but complement them, making cancer diagnostics faster, more widespread, and accessible to a larger number of people.
