Meta has announced that starting December 16, it will begin analyzing user conversations with its AI assistant to improve ad targeting accuracy. In other words — every time you chat with the bot about vacation, work, or health, your words could become data for creating even more personalized ads.
The company already uses posts, likes, and clicks to build user profiles, but AI conversations add a deeper, more direct layer of insight — revealing real intentions and needs. Meta also plans to feed this data into its recommendation algorithms, meaning the content you see in your feed — news, videos, and even ads — could be shaped by your previous interactions with the AI.
In the last quarter alone, Meta generated $46.5 billion in ad revenue, a 21% increase from the previous year. The new monitoring system could boost that figure further, but it won’t apply everywhere: the EU, UK, and South Korea are exempt due to strict privacy laws.
While advertisers see this as a revolution — because chatbot conversations reveal genuine user needs — many question where usefulness ends and surveillance begins. Meta claims the AI will provide “smarter recommendations,” but the question remains: how much are users willing to share when every sentence becomes a marketing signal?
