Alibaba-backed X Square nabs $100M

Chinese startup X Square Robot from Shenzhen, backed by Alibaba Cloud, has raised a new $100 million in funding, reinforcing its ambition to bring robots into homes before Tesla and Figure. In less than two years, the company has already secured a total of $280 million in capital, confirming the massive market appetite for humanoid and service robots.

Their latest project, Wall-OSS, is the first open-source foundation model specifically developed for robotics. This model lays the groundwork for what they call “embodied artificial intelligence” — AI capable of understanding and acting in the physical world, much like a human.

X Square has also unveiled its newest robot, Quanta X2, equipped with 360-degree rotating mop heads for cleaning and advanced pressure-sensitive hands that can respond to even the slightest touch. According to the team, the goal is for “robotic butlers” to become an everyday presence in homes within the next five years.

Unlike companies such as Unitree, X Square does not yet have mass-produced products — each robot version is customized to users’ specific needs, which affects the price. However, the company plans to drastically cut costs and bring the price of a humanoid robot below $10,000 by the end of the decade.

This rapid investment momentum shows just how “hot” the humanoid robot market has become. Chinese firms, backed by major players like Alibaba, increasingly threaten the dominance of Tesla, Agility Robotics, and Norway’s 1X — and it seems the race for a robot that truly lives and works among us has never been closer to reality.

In brief: Tech World Highlights:

  • Foxconn is reportedly set to unveil a humanoid with an “LLM-powered brain” later this year, to be deployed in its new Houston factory for manufacturing NVIDIA GB300 servers.
  • South Korea’s WIRobotics launched ALLEX, a humanoid with highly dexterous hands featuring 15 degrees of freedom (DOF), capable of precise tasks and lifting loads over 30 kg.
  • Writer launched Action Agent, an enterprise AI agent that autonomously executes tasks and uses tools within its environment, outperforming Manus and OAI Deep Research on benchmark tests.
  • Each SpaceX Starship launch from the Kennedy Space Center could cause flight delays of up to two hours at major Florida airports due to required airspace closures.
