OpenAI has just announced the construction of its first European AI center, called Stargate Norway, which will be located near Narvik. This massive facility, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, will run entirely on renewable energy and will house as many as 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, positioning it among the largest AI infrastructures in Europe.
The center’s initial capacity will be 230 megawatts, with the potential to scale up to an impressive 520 megawatts. The choice of Norway is no coincidence — its cold climate and stable renewable energy grid provide ideal conditions for cooling and operating such a demanding system. Additionally, excess heat generated by the GPUs will be redirected to local businesses for heating, further enhancing the project’s sustainability.
The $1 billion investment comes from Norwegian industrial group Aker and infrastructure company Nscale, which share ownership 50/50. The project also holds strategic significance for the country: Norway has become the first European nation to join the “OpenAI for Countries” program, announced in May this year.
Although there had previously been speculation about challenges in partnerships and possible downsizing of the Stargate initiative, this move — along with a recently signed massive deal with Oracle — shows that OpenAI is actually expanding its global reach, distributing AI’s infrastructure and energy demands across the globe.
