At Shopify, AI Is No Longer a Tool of the Future – It’s Everyday Reality

Imagine a company where using artificial intelligence has become as common as knowing how to use email or the internet. At Shopify, that’s now the new reality.

In an internal memo shared by Shopify’s CEO Tobi Lütke, one thing is clear: using artificial intelligence is no longer a recommendation – it’s an expectation.

It’s no longer enough to know what AI can do – now you need to know how to use it.

For many at Shopify, this isn’t news. Some use AI for research, others for coding, presentations, and even as a creative partner.

It’s fascinating to see how quickly AI is becoming part of everyday work – and how differently people experience it. If you’re curious about how AI looks through the eyes of those who have already retired, check out what retirees think about artificial intelligence.

Shopify emphasizes that AI offers something no other tool can: speed, clarity, and enormous potential. Employees who know how to use AI don’t just work better – they work ten times faster. And that’s where the big shift lies – those who use AI are redefining what’s possible today.

From now on, Shopify expects all tasks to be attempted using AI tools first – only if that doesn’t work can teams request additional resources. Performance evaluations will also include questions about how and how often you use AI in your daily work.

Sharing knowledge among colleagues is encouraged, as is trying out new ideas – and even making mistakes – because that’s how the team learns and grows together.

The message is clear: AI won’t just change how we work – it will change who we are. Those who want to be part of that transformation must join it openly and actively.

And you? Are you already on board – or just starting to discover what AI can really do?
